Cley Windmill is a wonderful and charming location for weddings based on the North Norfolk coast. It’s a great location, with it’s towering mill which includes accommodation, it’s gardens which back straight onto the vast Cley reed beds, a great local climate, and a wonderful beach just a stone’s throw away. Always beautifully bedecked with flowers the mill itself is particularly picturesque and always a pleasure to photograph particularly on a sunny day.
On this occasion I was photographing a small wedding for a short duration on a summer’s afternoon. The mill is perfect for smaller wedding parties and the newly designed garden which now flows seemlessly to the reed beds was the location for an outdoor ceremony blessed by some beautiful sunshine. I’d met up with the bride and groom a few months earlier to discuss their plans and as they have several children we decided that once everyone was ready we’d take some family photographs before all of the guests assembled, and later take some couple photographs after the ceremony and afternoon tea had been taken in the garden. The couple planned a village fete type theme to the afternoon, with afternoon tea, garden games and “guess the weight of the cake” it was to be laid back, relaxed and was to benefit from a wonderful backdrop and a beautiful day of weather.
A beautiful bride in her wedding dress, a handsome groom, and contributions to the wedding by their children made for a wonderful afternoon. The registrars conducted a “duo” ceremony whereby half the ceremony is outdoors followed by official register signing etc taking place in doors. The couple elected to walk down their outdoor aisle together and once the ceremony was concluded led their guests to the drinks and then onward to an enclosed garden for afternoon tea and games.
For the couple shots we had a short walk both out onto the reed beds for some views back on the mill, and up the mill itself to an observation deck which gives unrivalled views over the marshes. It was a stunning day in good company. A perfect Cley Windmill Wedding.
